FSC®-certified sourcing

A practical guide to FSC®-certified packaging

An overview of label categories, chain-of-custody requirements and the decisions that should be confirmed before artwork and production.

FSC Mix, FSC Recycled and FSC 100% certification labels with code C161583

Terms such as responsible and sustainable can be difficult to substantiate without a recognized system. FSC certification provides a chain-of-custody framework for forest-based materials and enables verified sourcing claims on eligible paper and board products.

What does FSC® chain-of-custody certification cover?

FSC chain of custody tracks forest-based materials through the supply chain, from certified or verified sources through processing, trading and manufacturing. For a finished package to carry an FSC label, its material route, participating certified organizations, production records and artwork approval must satisfy the applicable requirements.

Understanding FSC Mix, FSC Recycled and FSC 100%

FSC Mix

FSC Mix applies to products made with an eligible combination of material from FSC-certified forests, recycled fibre and/or FSC controlled wood in accordance with the applicable FSC sourcing system.

FSC Recycled

FSC Recycled identifies verified recycled material under the FSC system and may align with recycled-content procurement requirements.

FSC 100%

FSC 100% identifies material sourced entirely from FSC-certified forests. Availability depends on the selected paper or board and its certified supply route.

Confirm the FSC requirement at project initiation

An FSC label cannot be added as a final design element without an eligible material and compliant production route. Define the required claim before paper or board selection, quotation and artwork approval. Early confirmation helps avoid redesign, material substitution or an ineligible claim.

Incorporate the FSC label into approved artwork

The label category, licence code, dimensions, clearance and placement must comply with the applicable requirements and approval process. Do not redraw the mark, alter its proportions or position it beside an unapproved environmental statement. Reserve sufficient artwork space for clear, legible reproduction.

Questions to confirm with a packaging supplier

  • Is the proposed paper or board available through an eligible certified supply route?
  • Which FSC label category applies to the selected material?
  • Which licence code will appear in the artwork?
  • Who is responsible for artwork approval and production records?
  • Does the quotation clearly identify the certified material and applicable job scope?

Eagle Print Care FSC® certification

Eagle Print Care’s supplied certification documentation identifies licence code FSC® C161583 and eligible label routes for FSC Mix, FSC Recycled and FSC 100%. Availability for a specific project depends on the selected material and applicable certification requirements.

Define the FSC sourcing requirement at project initiation so that material selection, quotation, production planning and artwork follow the same approved route.
